Farr Better Ice Cream enjoys a long legacy of historical “firsts.” The business traces its roots to the pioneer era of frontier Utah. In 1895, Lorin Farr and his son Asael began harvesting ice, during winter, from ponds throughout northern Utah. The ice blocks, cut by hand using giant ice saws, were transported by horse-drawn sleigh to a large sawdust insulated warehouse in downtown Ogden, Utah. Then when summer would arrive the same horses would pull ice carts as they always strong and burly ice men would peddle their precious commodity up and down the streets of Ogden. On March 25, 1920 the Farr family officially incorporated the business as a Utah corporation and constructed the first commercial ice plant in a five state area.
In 1929 the U.S. commercial ice cream manufacturing industry was only in its infancy when the Farr company decided to open the first commercial ice cream manufacturing plant in Utah. Originally, the ice cream was sold exclusively in the company’s ice cream shop attached to the plant. Vanilla, chocolate and strawberry were the original flavors and a hefty single scoop cost a nickel. Today that same ice cream shop has become a Utah icon.
Over the years the Farr family has developed more than 600 different flavor recipes and built a trade name; Farr Better Ice Cream, which has become a household name throughout the mountain west.
